Newsletter for the week of Nov. 16-20

November 16, 2015

Dear Third Grade Parents and Students,

I hope all of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your families! I have many things to be thankful for. I feel blessed to be a part of a supportive community here at Holy Rosary. Thank you for your kind words and everything you have done for me so far this year! I’m grateful for your children and their never-ending jokes, questions, smiles and their thirst for knowledge! Enjoy the holiday!

Reminders:

Thanksgiving Mass:

The 3rd grade is leading the Thanksgiving Mass this Friday, November 2oth at 8:45 am. It will be a perfect uniform day. Please join us if you are able to.

Conferences: Conference time is an opportunity where the student, parents and I can discuss their child’s progress, and how we all can work together to help him or her be successful in third grade. I look forward to seeing you at your scheduled conference next week.

If something comes up and you need to make a change to your conference time, please contact me via email.

Christmas Poems: Students will have a choice of Christmas poems to memorize. Students will be bringing home a list of several Christmas poems tonight, please review these with your child. Wednesday, I will ask students to select one of these poems to begin to memorize. I will also send a rubric home for them to follow. Students will work to memorize the poems they choose and be prepared to share them with the class by Tuesday, December 8th. Students may choose a long or a short poem. If they choose a long (16 lines or more) poem, they may work with a partner to present it (each child memorizes and recites half). We are going to emphasize expression through voice, body language, and hand motions.

Service Field Trip:  We will be completing a service project during our Advent Outreach day on Thursday, December 17th.  As a school every class donates money and items to an organization and canned food for the Parish food bank.  The third grade will be collecting monetary donations to purchase a Christmas meal for 2 local families in need.  On December 17th, we will go to Safeway as a class and purchase the items needed for the meals.

We are looking for volunteers to walk with us to Safeway and help students price out items and purchase what we need.  A field trip form is coming home today.  Please return this by Thursday and note if you can volunteer.

We know this can be a busy season with many pulls on families financially.  We are not asking for any specific monetary donation, just whatever works for your family.  We encourage you to find ways for your children to earn the money to donate.

Book Fair: The book fair will run through conference week in the library.

Curriculum:

Math: We work on problem solving this week. Students work through different strategies to help them solve multi-step word problems.

Language Arts: Students finish writing their final draft of their personal narrative. They are excited to share these with you at conferences.

Social Studies: Students finish their culture project on Pic-Collage. Students are excited to share their collages and teach others about the country they studied.

Science: Students are reading about how scientists use force and motion to build robots to travel around Mars.

Religion: We will discuss about the Seven Sacraments. Students are able to

  1. define sacrament as an outward sign instituted by Christ to give grace,
  2. recognize that the Church offers us many gifts, such as the sacraments, in fulfilling our human desire to be close to God, and
  3. understand grace as the free and undeserved gift God gives us to respond to our vocation.

Reading: We read chapter 10 in the Boxcar children book. We focus on sequencing and also use an App on the iPads called ChatterBox to share character traits.

Spelling: The assignment is due Thursday, and the test is on Friday.
