Newsletter for the week of Nov. 30-Dec. 4

November 30, 2015

Dear Third Grade Parents and Students,

I really enjoyed meeting with you all last week for conferences, I am so proud of the work your kids are doing! I hope you had a great Thanksgiving break! I really enjoyed spending time with my family and eating some wonderful food. We have three weeks until Christmas break and the third grade will be busy, busy, busy!

Reminders:

Book Report: The book report is due this Wednesday. I can’t wait to see the finished products!

Reading logs: The December reading log is due tomorrow and the January reading log will come home with your child tomorrow as well.

Christmas Poems: Students will be sharing their poem with the class on Tuesday, December 8th. They will be assessed on expression, voice, eye contact, and hand motions. I can’t wait to hear the poems!

Nativity Play: The parts were chosen today and the scripts were handed out! The students are VERY excited about this play! Students should be practicing their parts every night. The students may bring their scripts home to practice, but they must bring them back everyday to practice in class.

You’re Invited:

We will present our play two times on Wednesday, December 16th. Our performance will be at 9:45 am. All parents, grandparents and siblings under 5 are invited. I’ll give more information

regarding costumes and props soon. Parents and grandparents as well as preschool aged siblings are invited to attend. Sorry, siblings at Holy Rosary will not be able to attend, due to limited space.

Christmas Program:

The Christmas program is next Thursday, December 10th at 6:30pm in the Church. Students are bringing home the lyrics for the songs today. These lyrics need to be practiced and memorized at home.

Advent Outreach:

During Advent, as a school every class collects money and items to give to an organization and canned food for the Parish food bank.  The third grade will be collecting monetary donations and purchasing a Christmas meal for 2 local families in need.  During the Safeway field trip, students will price and purchase items that a family needs to purchase for a Christmas meal. We know this is a busy season with many financial pulls on families.  If possible, consider donating any amount of money that makes sense for your family. We encourage you to find ways for your children to earn the money to donate as well by completing chores, etc. This is a great leadership opportunity for our class and a chance for students to live out Catholic social teachings.

Yearbook Orders: It’s time to order the 2015-2016 yearbook! Forms came home the week before last. We are so proud of our yearbook here at Holy Rosary because it’s one of the few yearbooks created entirely by 8th grade students, who design it using Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Comic Life, and the Herff-Jones’ online software. It’s going to be OUT OF THIS WORLD, so don’t miss out and order today! Forms are due by Friday, December 4th.

Prayer Partner in Faith Family: We will be meeting in our Faith Families tomorrow and will pick our Advent prayer partners. Please remind your child that their homemade card and prayer for their faith-family prayer partner are due to me by Monday, December 14th! If you child does not know who their prayer partner is please tell them to see their Faith Family teacher!

The card should reflect time well spent. Include on your card:

TO: (Your prayer partner’s name)

           FROM: (Your name)

A prayer that you have written

           Artwork that you have drawn

Anything else you’d like to include.

Advent Calendar: We will be talking about Advent in class and the importance of the season. Your child will be bringing home an Advent Calendar with them today (on purple paper). There is an “activity” for them to do or phrase for them to reflect on each day. Your child can mark each day with a sticker or star. Thank you for helping your child with this special activity.

States test (GeoJourney): The Southwest region and Mountain region test will be next Thursday, December 10th. Students will need to know the postal abbreviation and location of each state in those two regions. A study guide will come with your child today.

Curriculum:

Reading: We continue reading the Boxcar Children. We read chapters 11, 12, and 13 and finish the book. This week we work on sequencing and main idea.

Math: We begin chapter 5-understanding division. This week we do hands-on division and focus on the concept of division as equal sharing. We also look at division as repeated subtraction.

Religion: We discuss the meaning of Advent, and what we can do to be more reflective on the real reason for the season, which is Jesus!

We continue to prepare for Christmas by learning more about †he events that preceded Jesus’ birth. We will be practicing our Nativity play all this week and next.

Science: Students begin an unit on magnets. We read about a Japanese boy who uses magnets to solve a problem.

Social Studies: Students share their culture projects with classmates and we begin our study on Native Americans.

Spelling: Assignment is due Thursday and the test is on Friday.
