Dear Third Grade Students and Parents,

I hope you all had a wonderful time at WestFest! Thank you for all of your hardwork in putting WestFest together. It sure was a great success!

REMINDERS:

Picture Day: Individual picture day is tomorrow. Students can be in free dress.

Friday Dress: Friday, September 25 will be a Magazine Drive Spirit Day! Wear Seahawks colors or a Seahawks Jersey or t-shirt.

MAGAZINES: Tomorrow is magazine tally day! Let’s keep up the high selling and shoot for 100% participation!

Scholastic Book Orders: I will be sending home scholastic orders today. If your child would like to make a book order, please make sure that these are in to me by next Tuesday, September 29th. Thank you!!

Steps to Respect: We will start our Steps to Respect curriculum this week. A letter about this program came home with your child last week.

CURRICULUM:

Reading: We begin reading our first novel as a class this week. We read The Boxcar Children #1. We will focus on the skills of sequencing, character analysis, and setting. Students will practice oral reading skills through echo reading, partner reading and a reader’s theater approach. This is a fun story and one of which I’m sure most students will enjoy!

Math: We spend time reviewing for and taking our first summative assessment on place value tomorrow. We will then be moving on to chapter 4-understanding multiplication. We focus on the meaning of multiplication and how to use repeated addition. This will help us get ready for the IOWA tests in October.

We will be going back and doing chapter 2 and 3 in a few weeks.

Science: Students begin investigating force and motion through hands on work and observations.

Social Studies: We will locate the continents and oceans on a map. Students start a project where they create their own “Google Earth” guide.

Religion: We discuss God and his Creation. Children will understand that God creates freely and out of love.

Language Arts: We finish our writing on picking any animal as a pet. In our next writing unit, we focus on opinion writing. Students learn how to state an opinion based on information gathered and how to organize an essay in a clear way that makes sense to the reader.

Spelling: The assignment comes home tonight and is due Thursday. The test will be on Friday. The pattern we focus on this week is Long e and a.
