Newsletter for the week of Oct 31-Nov. 4

October 31, 2016

Dear Third Grade Parents and Students,

Happy Halloween!

Book Report: The students will be assigned their first book report tomorrow. They will be making a Story Wheel that shows important story elements from their book. They are to choose a fiction book (preferably 200 pages or less). It can be a book that they are already reading, but not one that they have already read. Your child will be given the instructions for the book report tomorrow and also a rubric, which I will use when grading them. This report is due on Wednesday, November 30th.

Thanksgiving Mass:

The 3rd grade is leading the Thanksgiving Mass on Friday, November 18th at 8:45 AM. Please let me know if your child will not be there.

Conference Sign-up: If you have not signed up for conferences yet, please do so online. Students attend the conference with you. You can find the link to sign-up on the Holy Rosary Website. Please email me if you have any questions or if you can’t find a time that works for you.

Geography Quiz: Last week we finished our Geography unit, there will be a short quiz next Tuesday, November 8th. A pink study guide will be coming home with your child tonight.

Math: We finish up our chapter on subtraction and take a subtraction assessment on Wednesday. We work on problem solving multi-step word problems and practice going through the steps of understanding, planning, solving and checking.

Language Arts: We finish our descriptive Fall poem. Students begin working on writing a personal narrative about something that has happened in their life. This week students will pick an event to write about and brain storm ideas.

Reading: Today we read and perform several short Halloween plays about bats, spiders, and pumpkins! Students will practice reading aloud in front of the class with excellent expression. This week we read chapter 8, our target skills are cause and effect and setting.

Religion: In the following two weeks, we will discuss about our Creed. Children will identify the Trinity as Mystery and name Persons of the Trinity with each of their roles. They will list and explain the four Marks of the Church: one, holy, catholic and apostolic. They will start praying the Creed as a profession of our Church beliefs

Spelling: The assignment is due Thursday and the test will be on Friday. We talk about unexpected consonant spelling.
