Newsletter for the week of Oct. 24-28

October 24, 2016

Dear Third Grade Parents and Students,

This is a very busy and fun week for us! Please take a few minutes to read through these reminders. We finished up IOWA testing today! The kids worked very hard and I am so proud of them!

REMINDERS:

Halloween Party: The party will be Monday, October 31st at 2:00 pm. Students may dress in orange and black. Please, no costumes or face paint.

“Backpacks of Love” – The Dominican Sisters in Tacoma work with immigrants as they are released from the detention center in Tacoma. The sisters are always looking for backpacks that they can give to those in need. We have a collection box outside of our 8th grade classrooms. If anyone would like to donate used backpacks for this cause please drop them off in the big blue box outside of 8B. We will deliver these to Tacoma at the end of next week.

Reading logs: Reading Logs for October are due next Tuesday. The reflection on the back of the calendar needs to be done as well.

Please help in getting the word out about upcoming Events at the school, share our Open House Facebook post or invite families to look at our Events Post on our school homepage:

Prayer to the Holy Spirit: Students have been reciting The Prayer to the Holy Spirit. This prayer will need to be memorized by Friday, November 4th. Your child can also recite the prayer to me before this date, if they are ready. They can recite the prayer to me before school, after school or at recess.

Here is the prayer in case your child can’t find their prayer card:

Prayer to the Holy Spirit:
Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful. And kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your spirit and they shall be created. And you shall renew the face of the earth.

Let us pray.

O God, by the light of the Holy Spirit you have taught the hearts of your faithful. In the same Spirit, help us to know what is truly right and always to rejoice in your consolation. We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

CURRICULUM:

Math: We focus on subtracting across zeros and using regrouping correctly.

Reading: We read chapter 6 and 7 in the Boxcar Children. This week we focus on character traits. Students identify traits for each character and find evidence in the book to back up their idea.

Science: Students learn about animal adaptations.  They read an article from Scholastic Super Science magazine called, “Animals in Disguise” and look for adaptations such as mimicry and camouflage in specific animals while reading.  Students will bring this magazine home to read more articles from when we are done!

Social Studies: We finish making our Geography lapbooks.

Language Arts: Students begin a free verse leaf poem, which describes fall. They incorporate all of the senses to help paint a picture for our minds. Our focus is on adding juicy adjectives to our writing.

Religion: This week we will continue to discuss the different forms or prayer and students write their own special prayers.

Art: Please check out Holy Rosary’s Art page for updates about all the amazing projects your child is working on in Art class! http://art.holyrosaryws.org/

Spelling: The homework is due Thursday and test will be Friday. Our pattern this week is three consonant clusters.
