Newsletter for the week of Nov. 2-6

November 2, 2015

Dear Third Grade Parents and Students,

THANK YOU to all of the parents that were able to come and volunteer at the Halloween party, it was a big hit! Both the kids and I really appreciated it!

Reminders:

Book Report: The students will be assigned their first book report tomorrow. They will be making a Story Wheel that shows important story elements from their book. They are to choose a fiction book (preferably 200 pages or less). It can be a book that they are already reading, but not one that they have already read. Your child will be given the instructions for the book report tomorrow and also a rubric, which I will use when grading them. This report is due on Wednesday, Dec. 2nd.

Thanksgiving Mass:

The 3rd grade is leading the Thanksgiving Mass on Friday, November 20th at 8:45 AM. Please let me know if your child will not be there.

Homework Check-In: Math homework is a review of what we are learning in class. You and I learned math in a different way than students are learning today. At times the vocabulary and process/instructions can be confusing. Math homework should take 25 minutes max. If your child is reaching a frustration level, please send in a note attached to the homework and don’t feel that he or she needs to complete it. I am happy to review it in the morning with your child! Thanks for your supporting your child’s learning!

Curriculum:

Math: We finish up our chapter on subtraction and take a subtraction assessment this week. We work on problem solving multi-step word problems and practice going through the steps of understanding, planning, solving and checking.

Social Studies: The Geography quiz will come home tonight. Please review it with you child.

We begin our study of culture. Students begin a project where they learn about the culture of a country of their choosing.  They will research the culture and then create a pic-collage using their iPad to demonstrate what they have learned. Many students may choose to study a country where their ancestors are from.

Science: Students finish their online log of the engineering process they completed during their snowboard ramp project.  They self-assess their work as well.  Graded rubrics will come home at the end of the week.

Language Arts: We finish our descriptive Fall poem. Students begin working on writing a personal narrative about something that has happened in their life. This week students will pick an event to write about and brain storm ideas.

Reading: We read chapter 7 and 8 this week. Our target skills are cause and effect and setting.

Religion: In the following two weeks, we will discuss about our Creed. Children will identify the Trinity as Mystery and name Persons of the Trinity with each of their roles. They will list and explain the four Marks of the Church: one, holy, catholic and apostolic. They will start praying the Creed as a profession of our Church beliefs
