Newsletter for the week of May 22-26

May 22, 2017

Dear Third Grade Parents and Students,

Reminders:

State in the box: The kids did a great job on these projects! The boxes will be coming home on Wednesday and grades will also come home this week.

50 States Test: Students will have their final state test next Tuesday, May 31st. The test will cover all 50 states and the abbreviations. Students will be given the names of the states and will have to label them on a map and write the abbreviation as well. A study guide was sent home last week.

Field Trip: Our field trip is this Thursday! We are excited to go and explore the Space Needle. Students must wear their uniforms (no free dress) and bring a paper bag sack lunch (a disposable lunch and bag). Also, we ask that students NOT bring money to spend. Thanks to all of the chaperones for volunteering to come with us, you will be receiving an email later in the week with detailed information. We will be leaving at 10:00 and coming back around 1:00.

Field Day: Field day is this Friday and will take place at Hiawatha! Our class will be wearing neon colors.   Permission slips need to be in by this Thursday. Please be sure your child has a water bottle and good tennis shoes to wear. Thanks!

Summer Pen-Pal Writing: I would like to invite all third graders to participate in our Summer Fun Pen-Pal Program. It is a great way to keep in touch with friends from 3rd grade and practice writing skills. It’s always a big hit! I will send forms home next Monday. If your child wants to participate the form needs to be turned in by Thursday June 1st.

Hermit Crab Adoption:  We’ve learned a lot and enjoyed having the hermit crabs in class this year!  It’s time for them to find a permanent home.  If your family would like the chance to adopt a hermit crab, please fill out the permission slip and return it to me by Monday, May 29th.  I’ll randomly pick 2 students from each class who have turned in their slip to adopt a crab!

*You need to have your own habitat, food and items for the crab- I’ll only be providing you with the lovely creature!  See the permission slip for information and crab needs.

This week, we will be learning:

Math: We review perimeter and area today and then take the assessment tomorrow. Then we move on to geometry.

Reading: Students read chapter 7 and 8, focusing on character traits.

Language Arts: Students will finish their iMovie Book Reports.

Religion: 3rd Graders will be introduced to and pray the Liturgy of the Hours.

Science:  Students work on their last engineering design project on force and motion.  Within a $70 budget, they design, buy items and build an invention that helps the sheep in the jeep from the pesky effects of gravity as they fall off of a cliff.  Through this we focus on the properties of force and motion, friction, air resistance and

Social Studies: Students take their 50 states test and learn about the history of the Space Needle in preparation for our field trip.
