Newsletter for the week of Feb. 10-14

February 10, 2014

Dear Third Grade Families,

I hope you had a lovely weekend. As we approach Valentine’s Day, I just want to thank each and every one of you for all of your support and kindness. I feel so blessed to be in such a loving community. I hope your week is full of love and kindness.

Mid-winter break:  This Friday is a half-day and there is no school Monday and Tuesday.  Enjoy the break!

Valentine’s Day (Friday)- Students can wear red, white, and pink.

We will also be having our party on Friday from 10:30-11:30.  Please make sure your child brings in their Valentine’s boxes by Friday.  School dismisses at 12.

BINGO BASH!

Bingo BASH and Bingo BLAST with the teachers is back again! Last year, the Bingo parties were the TOP grossing auction item and we teachers hope to reach that goal again while raising lots of money for our wonderful school and showing the kids a great time! It may be earlier than in the past, but all proceeds go towards the auction.

The Bingo Bash will be on Friday, February 28th for students in grades K-4! The night includes 10 full rounds of bingo in Lanigan Gym with a variety of terrific prizes for the winners. A BIG MONEY PRIZE will be awarded for the black-out game at night’s end. The cost is $25. A flier with a permission slip was sent home last Thursday with your child.

Multiplication/Division Timed Tests: The kids took a 2s test today.  Each child will have a sheet in their filer (in the assignment notebook section) that will indicate whether they passed their multiplication and division test.  Please review this with them every week (it should be updated on Tuesdays).

Native American Project:  This week we will discuss breaking up the visual aid in small chunks and not waiting until the last minute.  This would be a good time to begin brainstorming ideas for the visual and collecting materials.

This week we will be learning:

Math: Today we learned our 5 facts and students will be tested on these next Wednesday, Feb. 19th.   We continue to work on fractions.

Social Studies:  Students learn about the Southwest Native Americans.  Students will have a GeoJourney test on the Mountain region and North Central region states on Friday, February 21st.  Students will be tested on the state location and abbreviations.   A study guide will come home this week with your child.

Language Arts: Students begin to research for their clothing paragraph and begin drafting.

Science: We finish studying evaporation.

Religion: We study Church Leaders (Pope, Bishops, Pastors…)

Reading: We read the story Tops and Bottoms in our reading book.  Our study skill for the week is summarizing.    We learn that a summary is a few sentences that tell the main idea of a story or article.

Spelling: Spelling homework is due Thursday and the test is on Friday.
