Newsletter for the week of Dec. 1-5

December 1, 2014

Dear Third Grade Parents and Students,

I hope you had a great Thanksgiving break! I really enjoyed spending time with my family and eating some wonderful food. We have three weeks until Christmas break and the third grade will be busy, busy, busy!

Reminders:

Nativity Play: The parts will be chosen this week and the scripts will be handed out! The students are VERY excited about this play! Students should be practicing their parts every night. The students may bring their scripts home to practice, but they must bring them back everyday to practice in class.

 You’re Invited:

We will present our play two times on Wednesday, December 17th. Our first showing will be at 9:OO am and our second showing will be at 1:00 pm. Since the play is held in the classroom, having

two showings will make for less crowded performances. All parents,

grandparents and siblings under 5 are invited. I’ll give more information

regarding costumes and props soon. Parents and grandparents as well as preschool aged siblings are invited to attend. Sorry, siblings at Holy Rosary will not be able to attend, due to limited space.

Bowling Party: 3rd grade won first place in the Magazine Drive and to celebrate we will be having a bowling party! The bowling party will be at West Seattle Bowl on Thursday, December 18th. We will leave school at 1:15 pm and walk to the bowling alley. We will come back to school at 3:00PM. We will need chaperones to walk with us and help supervise the party. Please, email me by Wednesday if you are able to chaperone. Thank you!

Tree Lot Christmas Party:There will be a Tree Lot Christmas party this Friday, Dec. 5th from 6-8. It starts in the school hall where there will have a presentation, food/drinks and raffles. It will end in the gym with an organized “snowball” fight. It is sure to be fun and festive! Come support HRS and local charities!

Christmas Program:

The Christmas program is next Thursday, December 11th at 6:30pm in the Church. Students brought home the lyrics for the songs they will be signing, last week. These lyrics need to be memorized.

Christmas Poems: Students will be sharing their poem with the class on Monday, December 8th. They will be assessed on expression, voice, eye contact, and hand motions. I can’t wait to hear the poems!

Advent Outreach: We will be participating in an Advent outreach day on Thursday, December 18th. This is a chance for everyone at HRS to give back and serve others in need. All Holy Rosary School classes are asked to select organizations to support during Advent, Catholic Schools Week and Lent. Canned food, specific items of need and monetary donations will be collected to help those less fortunate.

Each 3rd grader is being asked to bring in the following by Thursday, Dec. 18th:

  • A monetary ($) donation for Uganda(ex: $1.00)
  • A package of diapers for Westside Baby
  • 1 can of food for St. Vincent de Paul

Prayer Partner in Faith Family: We will be meeting in our Faith Families tomorrow and will pick our Advent prayer partners. Please remind your child that their homemade card and prayer for their faith-family prayer partner are due to me by Wednesday, December 17th! If you child does not know who their prayer partner is please tell them to see their Faith Family teacher!

The card should reflect time well spent. Include on your card:

TO: (Your prayer partner’s name)

           FROM: (Your name)

A prayer that you have written

           Artwork that you have drawn

Anything else you’d like to include.

Advent Calendar: We will be talking about Advent in class and the importance of the season. Your child will be bringing home an Advent Calendar with them today (on purple paper). There is an “activity” for them to do or phrase for them to reflect on each day. Your child can mark each day with a sticker or star. Thank you for helping your child with this special activity.

State tests: The Southwest region and Mountain region test will be coming home with your child today. Please review this with them. It is important to discuss the importance of studying for these tests a little every night.

This week we will be learning:

Reading: We continue reading the Boxcar Children. We read chapter six and seven, focusing on identifying character traits.

Math: This week we do hands-on division and focus on the concept of division as equal sharing. We also look at division as repeated subtraction.

Religion: We discuss the meaning of Advent, and what we can do to be more reflective on the real reason for the season, which is Jesus!

We continue to prepare for Christmas by learning more about †he events that preceded Jesus’ birth. We will be practicing our Nativity play all this week and next.

Science: We are starting our new unit on water and weather.

Social Studies: Students will take a test on our first unit of Geography. The test will be next Thursday, December 11th. A study guide will come home tomorrow. We also begin our study of culture.

Spelling: Assignment due Thursday. Test is Friday.
