Newsletter for the week of Jan. 9-13

January 9, 2017

Dear Third Grade Parents and Students,

There will be no school next Monday in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.

Timed Facts Tests: Students took their 0/1 tests today. They will keep track of the facts they have passed on a NEON GREEN sheet taped inside the front cover of their student planner. If there is an X on the box, the student passed. If there is not an X, they need to continue to study that fact and re-take the test. Retakes will be Thursdays during morning recess. Please check this sheet each Monday/Tuesday to see if your child passed the test for the week or if they need to keep studying. Feel free to email me with any questions.

Instagram: We studied what it meant to be a digital citizen at the beginning of the year and this week will begin posting to our Instagram page. I will be sending out a handout this week about digital citizenship (that I also sent at the beginning of the year).   You can follow us at MrsMelandsClass.

Native American Project: Students must have their tribe picked by this Wednesday, January 11th. Please let me know if you have any questions about this. Students need to have all their research material at school by Wednesday. This will stay at school for the remainder of the project (if a book needs to be renewed students can bring the book home).

Classroom Help: I am looking for some help in the classroom with the Native American project.  It is nice to have another adult(s) in the room to help with researching and editing with the kids.  Here are some dates and times that we will be working on the project:

            Wednesday, January 18th from 10:40-11:20

            Thursday, January 19th from 1:30-2:05

            Tuesday, January 24th from 9:30-10:10

            Wednesday, January 25th from 10:40-11:20

            Thursday, January 26th from 1:30-2:05

            Thursday, February 2nd from 1:30-2:05

            Tuesday, February 7th from 9:30-10:10

            Wednesday. February 8th from 10:40-11:20

Tuesday, February 14th from 9:30-10:10

If you are able to help with one of these times or multiple times, let me know. I will post more times in future newsletters if I need help. Thank you for all you do!

Mass: We have Mass at 10:15am on Wednesday. Students need to be in perfect uniform.

GeoJourney Test: We have a test on the Southwest and Mountain region states and abbreviations on Friday.

Special Reading Item: We are reading about Roberto Clemente, a famous baseball player this week. Students are encouraged to bring a favorite baseball cap to wear during reading class this week.

Math: Students take the 0 and 1 facts test today. They also will be introduced to the 2s facts today. The 2s tests will be next Tuesday, January 17th.

We also continue in chapter 10 on fractions. This week we focus on parts of sets and using fractions to solve word problems.

Religion: We continue to learn about parables. We read the Parable of the Prodigal Son and summarize it, talk about the symbols in it and the lesson it teaches us.

Language Arts: Students learn how to take notes from resource materials in order to prepare for their Native American project.

Social Studies: We begin our Native American unit. This week students pick a Native American name and learn about the different regions of tribes in North America.

Science: Students build, test, record data and redesign their crabitats.  They have to stay in a $100 “budget” and make careful observations about other crabitats to determine what the crabs enjoy and dislike in order to redesign their own habitat.

Reading: We read Roberto Clemente and learn about his importance in history. Students discuss what makes someone a hero and write about these traits.

Spelling: Homework is due Thursday, test is on Friday. The pattern this week is vowel + /r/ sounds.
