Newsletter for the week of Jan. 25-29

January 25, 2016

Dear Third Grade Families,

I am so proud of the 3rd graders prayer service on Friday! They did a great job. It was great seeing you all there.

Reminders:

Native American Project: This week we will discuss breaking up the visual aid in small chunks and not waiting until the last minute. This would be a good time to begin brainstorming ideas for the visual and collecting materials.

Mid Trimester Reports: Mid-Trimester progress reports will be coming home this Friday, January 29th. Please review this with your child. These do not need to be returned to school.

Volunteer Needed: Next Wednesday is Grandparents’ Day and our schedule is very different. We won’t have a second outdoor recess or anyone to watch our kids for recess (my lunch time). Is there anyone that would be available from 12:25 to 12:45 to read to the kids during lunch so I can eat lunch too? Let me know. Thanks!

Catholic Schools Week: Catholic Schools Week is next week! Please check the Holy Rosary website for the CSW schedule. There will be a lot of fun activities going on!

Sunday, January 31Faith, Knowledge and Service: In our Faith Community

  • Students wear uniforms to Mass
  • Distinguished Alumni Presentation: 10:30 Mass
  • Student Mass helpers – Families sign up online with Sign-Up Genius.
  • Children’s Choir sings at 10:30 am Mass.
  • Blessing of the Altar Servers – at the end of all Masses

We highly encourage families to come to the 10:30 Mass and then come visit the classrooms during open house.

  • Open House and Reception: 11:30-1:30
  • Book Fair in the school library open all week

Monday, Feb. 1 – Faith, Knowledge and Service: In our Parent Community

  • All School Bingo/ All School Read-in (2:00-3:00)

Service Opportunity: During Catholic Schools Week for our service day (Tues) we are completing a service project with our 7th grade buddies.  Together we will make lunches for the homeless men at St. Martin de Porres.  We are collecting items needed to make these lunches and will put them together at school and deliver them to the shelter.  Please visit the Sign Up Genius link and sign up for an item to assist with this:

We really appreciate your help and generosity!

This week:

Reading:  We read the story Tops and Bottoms in our reading book. Our study skill for the week is summarizing.  We learn that a summary is a few sentences that tell the main idea of a story or article.

Math: Students took the 10s tests today. Please make sure you are checking their check off sheet (in the math section) to see what facts they have passed. Retakes are on Tuesday at morning recess. We learn the 3s facts today and students will be tested on these next Monday.

We continue our study of fractions. This week we focus on equivalent fractions and take a short quiz on the fraction concepts covered thus far. This will be sent home this week.

Science: Students carry out their design from last week and create their Maglev Transportation System (vehicle that travels using magnets).  As they do this, they also re-design keeping track of what problems they have and how they are fixing those problems.

Social Studies: Students continue to work on their Northwest Coast Native American artwork.

Language Arts: Students take notes on clothing and begin drafting their second paragraph. We also discuss the visual this week.

Religion: We study the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy and talk about what we can do to show mercy to others.

Spelling: Assignment due Thursday. Test is on Friday.
