Newsletter for the week of Feb. 8-11

February 8, 2016

Dear Third Grade Families,

We had a wonderful Catholic Schools Week last week! I hope you had a lovely weekend. As we approach Valentine’s Day, I just want to thank each and every one of you for all of your support and kindness. I feel so blessed to be in such a loving community. I hope your week is full of love and kindness.

Native American Project Update:
I am so proud of how hard the students are working on their Native American projects! This week students will be finishing with the research and wrapping up their rough drafts. I will begin sending books home at the end of this week along with their note-taking guides, so they can begin to prep for the oral report. At this point, students should know what they are doing for their visual and begin working on it. All projects are due March 1st.

Ash Wednesday Mass: Mass is this Wednesday at 8:45 am. Students need to be in perfect uniform.

Mid-winter break: This Thursday is a half-day and there is no school on Friday, Monday and Tuesday. Enjoy the break!

Valentine’s Celebration (Thursday)- Students can wear red, white, and pink.  We will also be having our party on Thursday from 11:00-12:00. Please make sure your child brings in their Valentine’s boxes by Thursday. School dismisses at 12.

Parish Ministry Volunteer: It is a tradition for Parish Children’s Ministries to invite the families that celebrated Sacraments with us last Spring to participate in the ministry of preparation for the next year’s class. (We are also reaching out to the 4th grade families.)  Please understand that Sacramental Preparation is a Parish Based ministry and we rely very heavily on volunteers to keep all these wonderful programs going.  We are asking for volunteers for our 1st Communion Family Learning Classes.  Please use the link if you are able to help in this capacity.  Holy Rosary School parents can earn general volunteer hours as a Children’s Ministry Volunteer.

This week we will be learning:

Math: Today students took the 4s tests and we go over the 6 facts today. Students will be tested on the 6 facts Monday, Feb. 22nd. We also continue our study of fractions. This week work on comparing fractions and review for the fractions test.

Social Studies: Students learn about the Northwest Coast Native Americans. Students will have a GeoJourney test on the North Central region states on Wednesday, Feb. 24th. Students will be tested on the state location and abbreviations.   A study guide will come home today with your child (yellow paper).

Science:  We spend the next few weeks reading from and doing activities related to our Scholastic News SuperScience magazines. Through it we will read about various physical and life science topics that are aligned to the common core.  Our next unit of focus will be heredity and animal habitats and adaptations so we will focus our energy on the articles related to those topics.  Students get to keep these informational magazines, so you’ll see them coming home as we finish them up!

Language Arts: Students are working on their food paragraphs this week. Some will also begin to write an additional paragraph on an area of interest for their tribe.

Religion: We prepare for Ash Wednesday by talking about almsgiving, fasting and prayer.

Reading: We read the story, Kamishabai Man. We focus on how the mood changes throughout the story. We also focus on the target skill of cause and effect.

Spelling: No spelling this week

No Star this week

Have a FANTASTIC week!!

Sincerely,

Erin Meland
