Newsletter for the week of Feb. 7-10

February 7, 2017

Dear Third Grade Families,

We had a wonderful Catholic Schools Week last week! I hope you had a lovely weekend and enjoyed the beautiful SNOW yesterday!

Valentine Boxes: Students will be making their Valentine’s Day boxes at home and they need to be brought in on or before Tuesday, February 14th. A handout about the Valentines box project is coming home with your child today (pink paper). There is an optional STEM component to the creation if students would like to use science and engineering while building. See the handout for full details.

Valentine’s Day Celebration, Feb. 14th: Students are invited to exchange valentines with their classmates. If your child chooses to bring in valentine cards, I ask that they bring one for each student in 3B (24 students). We will be having a Valentine’s celebration from 2:15-3:00 on Tuesday, Feb. 14th. Students are invited to dress in Valentine’s colors (white, red, pink, or purple) on this day as well!

Native American Project Update: Visual aids and presentations are due in a month (on March 7th). They are making great progress on their writing. This is a good time to discuss the visual aid. See the NA handout for ideas and requirements. Please feel free to email me with any questions. The visual aid doesn’t have to be a diorama- it oculd be an outfit that the student puts together and wears, a handmade book, a puppet show, a PowerPoint, etc. The visual should be done by th

e student with parent support and guidance.

Books will come home sometime next week, so you can use them for resources on the at home pieces. Thanks for your understanding if they are overdue from the library; we are almost done with research.

Mass: We have Mass on Thursday at 2:00pm; it will be a perfect uniform day.

Mid Trimester Reports: Mid-Trimester progress reports will be coming home this Friday, Feb. 10th. Please review this with your child. These do not need to be returned to school.

 ATTENTION ALL FUN-SEEKERS:

It is time to sign up for the annual Bingo Bash with the Teachers! Flyers have been sent home with your child. For those of you whose children have never attended, it’s a very fun night for the kids to spend with their classmates and teachers playing bingo, eating pizza and winning prizes! It is our faculty auction donation and always raises lots of money for our wonderful school. Parents drop the children off at the gym at 6:00 pm on Friday, February 24th and pick them up at 8:00, so it allows you time to have some fun yourselves while the kids are here at school! Your child will definitely want to be part of the fun. Send all completed forms back with your child or drop them at the office. THANK YOU!!!

This week we will be learning:

Math: Today students took the 5s tests. There will be no new fact this week. This is a good week for students to review the facts we have already studied and catch up on tests that they have not passed yet. We will do retakes on Thursday. We also continue our study of fractions. This week we work on comparing fractions and fractions as whole.

Science:  We begin our study of Magnets.  Students create research questions that they will explore during our unit.

Language Arts: Students are working on their food paragraphs this week.

Reading:

This week we will be reading a play called “Two Bear Cubs”. This is a myth focuses on the lesson that it’s important for a community to come together to help each other in times of trouble. We will practice reading the play as a whole class, in small groups, and individually. We will review vocabulary and also practice writing summaries of each scene.

Spelling: Assignment due Thursday. Test is on Friday.
