Newsletter for the week of April 3-7

April 3, 2017

Dear Third Grade Parents and Students,

It was wonderful to see some of you at the auction on Saturday! Thank you all so much for supporting our wonderful school.

Reminders:

Morning Mass: As a class we have the opportunity to celebrate Mass together before school during this Lenten Season. We will be going to morning Mass this Thursday, April 6th at 7:45 am.  You can stay with your child or drop them off with me to sit with our group.

Items Needed:

By Monday, April 10th each student needs to bring in an egg carton (one dozen) and 12 normal, plastic eggs. These will be used with our Passion Book project.   If you have any extra eggs cartons that we can use, please send them in as well. Thank you!

States Test:  The Southeastern States test will be on Thursday, April 13th.  A pink study guide will be sent home today.  Students will be tested on the states and abbreviations.  Another great way to study is by using this online game: http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/USA_Geography/USA_G0_click_1024.html

Choose the “Southern States“- The only two states that are not in this section, that will be on the test are Virginia and West Virginia.

Measurement Assessment: Last Thursday we took an assessment on measurement and time. This test will come home on Tuesday. Please review it with your child.

Reading Log: The March reading log is due tomorrow and the April log will come tomorrow as well.

Apostles Creed:

The Apostles’ Creed is one of the prayers that 3rd graders are asked to memorize.

We will recite this prayer daily and students should practice it at home as well. They have a copy of the prayer in their filer. They need to have this committed to memory by Friday, April 28th and recite it to me for assessment on or anytime before that date.

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended into hell

On the third day he rose again;

he ascended into heaven,

is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy Catholic church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

Steps To Respect Homework: Last week we did a lesson about “joining groups”. We talked about how to join a game or activity at recess and also how to invite others to join. This week at recess or outside of school, students are being asked to invite one person to play and also to ask to join a new group/game. We will reflex on this at the end of the week. More information about this is in their religion section of their filer on a yellow paper called “Joining a Group.”

BROWN BAG FRIDAYS FOR ST. MARTIN de PORRES MEN’S SHELTER:

Every year, as part of our Lenten Outreach, Holy Rosary School has provided lunches to the men at St. Martin de Porres shelter. Students are asked to bring a lunch or two and a toiletry item on designated Fridays during Lent.

These lunches can be kept cold, so perishable food is fine.

**Please keep the toiletry items separate from the lunches:

– April 7 – disposable razors/shaving cream (sample size)

For 3rd Grade we are collecting the following:

*Money for Uganda- Throughout Lent we will be collecting money for Uganda. We encourage you to find ways for your child to earn   this money through chores or good works so that they feel responsible for their donations. Every dollar helps!

*CHIEF SEATTLE CLUB: The 3rd grade is collecting gently used or new adult warm clothing to donate to Chief Seattle Club, an organization that specializes in assisting Native Americans.

*CANNED FOOD COLLECTION: As a school we will be contributing to the HRS food pantry. Each student should bring a can a food to contribute to the pantry

This week we will be:

Reading: We continue with our story, A Tree is Growing. We review graphic and text features.

Math: Students took their 10s test today. They also learn their 11 facts today and the test will be next Monday. We start chapter 12-Represent and Interpret Data. This week we work with scaled picture graphs and bar graphs.

Language Arts: Students continue to work on their Passion books. This week we read and summarize the last 4 stories. Next week we will be sharing these books and their egg cartons with kindergarten and first grade.
